Scientists have been paying tribute to the Hubble telescope, 10 years after it was launched.

The Challenger space shuttle carried the US-European space telescope into orbit on 24 April 1990, opening a new era in the history of astronomy.

David Leckrone, a scientist at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said.

"Not since Galileo aimed a small 30-power telescope into the night sky in 1609 has humanity's vision of the universe been so revolutionised in such a short time span by a single instrument."

1990年的4月24日，挑战者号航天飞机将欧美合作制造的哈勃望远镜送入太空，从而宣告了天文学新时代的到来。
