Achilles took some of the dust of the plain and poured it on his head. He wept and tore his hair.

His mother, Thetis, goddess of the sea, heard his cry and came and laid her hand on his head and asked, Why weepest thou, my son?

Then Zeus sent a messenger to Achilles. Rouse thee, Achilles, said the messenger, or the body of Patroclus will be a prey for the dogs of Troy.

while Achilles walked, with many tears, by the side of the body. At dawn Thetis brought the new arms and laid them before Achilles.

Loud they rattled on the ground, and all the men trembled to hear, but when Achilles saw them, his eyes blazed with fire,
