Paul agreed, though he was not altogether thrilled at the thought of such a climb. Hogan Hill rose steeply back of the school. A few hay-fields covered its lower level, but above them the timber growth was fairly thick, and Paul knew from experience that skiing on a wooded slope was far from easy. But Bill had no intention of tackling the steep slope directly. He knew of an old wood-road which led nearly to the summit by many twists and curves. It was his idea that they take this old road as far as it went and then ski back down its winding length.

By the time they were half-way up, Paul was getting rather breathless. It was the first time he had been on skis in nearly a year, and his muscles were soft from lack of exercise. He made no complaint, however, and presently Bill himself proposed a rest.

“I wish I could handle skis as easily as you do,” he commented. “You just glide along as if you were on skates.”

“I may glide, but I haven’t any wind left,” confessed Paul. “I’ve used skis ever since I was a little kid, and compared to some of the fellows up home, I am rather poor. Do you think we ought to go any farther? I felt some snow on my face just then.”
