Instead of scaring villagers away like he used to, a reluctant Shrek now agrees to autograph pitch forks. What’s happened to this ogre’s roar? Longing for the days when he felt like a “real ogre,” Shrek is duped into signing a pact with the smooth-talking dealmaker, Rumpelstiltskin. Shrek suddenly finds himself in a twisted, alternate version of Far Far Away, where ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king and Shrek and Fiona have never met. Now, it’s up to Shrek to undo all he’s done in the hopes of saving his friends, restoring his world and reclaiming his one True Love.
这部“史瑞克”将是这一动画系列的终篇，也是《怪物史莱克》系列首次以3D立体电影形式上映。
史瑞克生活安定下来后开始怀念自己的本性——“怪物”的一面，他和格林童话中的著名角色小精灵“Rumpelstltskin”签订了一份协议，结果陷入了另外一个版本的“Far far away”王国：在那里“史瑞克”从没存在过、小精灵Rumpelstltskin是国王、驴子成了拉车的苦力、靴子猫又懒又胖、怪物处处受女巫的追杀……更重要的是，在这个世界里史瑞克和菲欧拉公主从没有相遇过。为了回到自己原有的幸福生活，史瑞克必须打败“Rumpelstltskin”！
除了原有的老角色及配音明星悉数回归外，《史瑞克4》里还加入了一些新角色，首先就是大反派“Rumpelstiltskin”，这个出自《格林童话》的狡诈小精灵曾在《怪物史瑞克2》和《怪物史瑞克3》中短暂露面；另外《广告狂人》（Mad Men）男主角乔•海姆（Jon Hamm）也将为一个长得好看的怪物配音，他将领导一支队伍秘密反抗小精灵的统治。
