162.在屋里
John's heart was on fire as they walked into Ursula's old home.
约翰走进厄休拉那个老家时心里非常激动。
He had been there on occasion when he was young, but now it was so broken down.
小的时候，他偶尔来过这里,而现在这所房屋已经破旧不堪。
Ursula was on her way to put some tools on order to fix it up when she saw him, she said.
见到他的时候厄休拉正准备订购一些工具把房子修好，她说。
Then John went in to greet Ursula's ailing mother. She smiled and remembered his name.
接着约翰进去与厄休拉生病的母亲打招呼。她笑了，想起了他的名字。
But she didn't get up; she was on her last legs, she said,
但没有起来，她说她快死了，
ever since she had injured herself when riding through some woods on horseback!
自从在森林里骑马受伤之后她就在死亡线上挣扎！
Now she could hardly get up on her feet anymore on her own.
现在她几乎不能靠自己站起来了。
And she missed the feeling of standing on land! But that was now her lot-to stay in bed.
她很怀念站在地上的感觉！可现在她就是那种命——躺在床上。
She was just glad that he was on hand to see her one more time and she hoped he'd stay for dinner.
她很髙兴他到场再看她一次，并希望他留下来吃晚饭。
John smiled and agreed. That was what he was hoping for too!
约翰笑着答应了。他也希望留下来吃晚饭！
Back in the living room, John was on edge again. He didn't know what to say.
回到起居室，约翰又变得紧张不安起来。他不知道该说些什么。
"My wife died two years ago!" he said.
"我妻子是两年前去世的！"他说。
"I heard." Ursula replied. "I almost called you several times, but my life has been so on hold because of my mother.
"我听说过。"厄休拉答道。"我差不多给你打了好几次电话，可由于我母亲的原因我的生活很受限制。
I wanted to call you on my own time in my own way! But this is nice-seeing you like this, in the old neighborhood!"
我想在业余时间以我自己的方式给你打电话！不过这样也好——在老居民点这样见到你！"
"I said earlier that I was on my way back from work，" John said.
"我早说过我正在下班回来的路上，"约翰说。
"And that's true! But I really came to see you again! I found out yesterday that you were still living here!"
"我说的是真话！但我真的是来看你的！我昨天才弄清楚你还住在这里！"
"I'm glad!" she replied. "C'mon, let's talk more in the kitchen.
"我很高兴！"她回答道。来吧，我们到厨房继续聊。
I have to find something nice to get ready for dinner!"
我得找点儿好吃的为晚饭做准备！"
