贾樟柯透露，《天注定》一片是向胡金铨、张彻等武侠巨匠的致敬作品。此片灵感在筹备《在清朝》时突然产生，贾樟柯称之为“闪电一般的灵感”，于是他向《在清朝》的监制杜琪峰告假，迅速在去年5月开拍《天注定》。
