“I’ve appreciated the ‘lotus spirit’ since I was young, and I’ve written many poems about the noble flower,” the scholar said, revealing that her nickname as a child was Xiaohe, meaning Little Lotus.

“After announcing my plans to support Nankai University in setting up the Jialing Fund, to support research into Chinese traditional culture, many people have asked me why I’m committed to doing so,” she said.

“I’ve never cared about personal wealth as I’ve weathered all types of challenges and endured many losses in my lifetime. In my darkest moments, it was poetry that enabled me to gain perspective.”

Studies in Chinese Poetry, the 1988 book she co-wrote with Harvard professor James Hightower, is recognized as having had a profound impact on the global appreciation of Chinese poetry.

To read Chinese poetry effectively, one must possess a highly sensitive mind and must read extensively into Chinese cultural and literary traditions. There are many ways to read poetry, as modern Western literary theories demonstrate to us. However, what Hightower and Yeh did in this collection has shown us a most effective way to approach classical Chinese poetry.

What are your initial memories of the Department of Asian Studies?

When I first came to teach at UBC, Asian Studies was in Buchanan, and I enjoyed it because I could see the mountains and ocean. After this building was built, we moved to the building we're currently in. After the move, we sank down (laughs). But the surrounding of this building is beautiful, I do love it.

Tragedy again struck in 1976, when Yeh’s eldest daughter and son-in-law were killed in a traffic accident in Toronto. More recently, her younger daughter was reportedly diagnosed with cancer, while Chao died in 2008.

“Enormous sorrow and hardship have propelled me to gain an outlook in life that I don’t mind any success and failure, gain and loss,” she said.
