Dirty Dozen 2022: Produce with the most and least pesticides

Strawberries continue to top the annual list of the “Dirty Dozen” fruits and veggies that contain the highest levels of pesticides, according to the Environmental Working Group’s 2022 Shopper’s Guide to Pesticides in Produce.

The EWG found that 99% of strawberry samples (most recently tested in 2015-16) had detectable residues of at least one pesticide, earning the fruit the No. 1 spot.

Shauna Henley, PhD, a family and consumer sciences senior agent at the University of Maryland Extension, said that the best way to wash produce depends on its surface. Use a produce brush on rough surfaces like melons and rub smooth surfaces, like apples, with your hands.
