Investors who are diving into the bitcoin mania are doing so “entirely at their own risk”, the Banque de France head said on Friday, in the latest warning over the protection offered to investors lured in by the huge rally in prices.

Fran?ois Villeroy de Galhau told a conference in Beijing that bitcoin’s “value and extreme volatility have no economic basis, and they are nobody’s responsibility,” according to the central bank’s Twitter account.

“The Banque of France reminds those investing in bitcoin that they do so entirely at their own risk,” Mr Villeroy said.

Bitcoin has surged from about $1,000 per coin at the start of the year to as high as $11,395 this week, according to Reuters data. Over just the past few days, it has swung into and out of bull and bear markets, trading on Friday morning at $9,600.

Given the market-leading price returns, bitcoin has garnered increasing levels of attention from retail investors and professionals. In Asia, Shinhan Bank, South Korea’s biggest bank by assets, is planning to launch a bitcoin vault service.

But amid all of the hype, many financial industry veterans remain wary. JPMorgan Chase chief executive Jamie Dimon famously called bitcoin a “fraud”, while BlackRock CEO Larry Fink said it is an “index of money laundering“.
