Experts found the cost of raising a child from birth until the age of 18 came to 79,176 pounds for a boy and 108,884 pounds for a girl - a difference of 29,708 pounds.

The study, by MoneySuperMarket.com, found it was girls' clothes, toiletries and makeup that weighed most heavily on their parents' wallets.
While babies cost about the same amount per week - parents will spend about 2,400 pounds on nappies in total - by the time kids hit their teens, the contrast is stark.

Girls will rack up around 13,000 pounds on toiletries and cosmetics throughout their teenage years alone, while boys' parents will splash out 7,800 pounds on technology.

The clothes are clearly the biggest contributor; even at toddler age, girls appear to cost nearly 37 per cent more than boys.
Throughout childhood, female clothing costs can reach as much as 11,720 pounds - almost double the cost for boys, which is just under 5,890 pounds.
And it seems the gender pay gap exists among youngsters too, with boys demanding 10% more pocket money than their female counterparts.
