The California school knocked London Business School and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the 2011 joint winners, from the number one slot.
Stanford's breakthrough sees the Palo Alto school become only the fourth institution to take the number one slot in the annual FT ranking since its inception in 1999.
The FT rankings compile data across 20 different categories, including the international outlook of the school, research and ideas generation, and the success of graduates from the 100 ranked full-time MBA programmes. Stanford has increasingly dominated the category for the average salaries earned by alumni three years after graduation, and alumni have reported the highest post-MBA salaries for the past six years.
This year, the figure, compiled over three years, stands at $191,657, nearly $14,000 more than the alumni of Stanford's nearest rival, Harvard Business School, which topped the FT rankings in 1999 and 2000. The rise of Stanford to the top of the league, at the expense of LBS, which dropped to number four this year, mirrors a more general trend in this year's table, in which US schools have reasserted their supremacy at the cost of European ones. Of the 47 US-based schools that feature in both the 2011 and 2012 rankings, 20 moved up the list this year. In contrast, only five of the 23 European schools listed in both years improved their position. In particular, average alumni salaries three years after graduation were lower in 2012 when compared with the previous year for 16 out of the 23 European schools listed.
