Typhoon Soudelor has killed at least 9 people in Wenzhou in East China, with three people still missing. After pounding Taiwan and leaving six people dead,four missing and over 100 injured, Soudelor landed in the Chinese mainland on Saturday evening in Fujian Province.
It moved from there to neighboring Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces. Heavy downpours caused mudslides and cave-ins in rural areas of Wenzhou, the third largest city in Zhejiang Province, and several houses collapsed on Saturday night. Local officials said the missing people may have been washed away by floods or buried under collapsed houses.
A quarter of a million people were affected in the city with direct economic losses of 248 million yuan. In neighboring Fujian Province, authorities said 160,000 people were evacuated on Saturday night in the provincial capital of Fuzhou.
