World on the brink of a new Cold War, says Gorbachev

As Germany prepares to commemorate 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the man who was in the middle of it all---former Soviet Union leader Mikhail Gorbachev warns of a new Cold War as Russia and the West go toe to toe over Ukraine.

(SOUNDBITE) (RUSSIAN/ENGLISH) FORMER SOVIET PRESIDENT MIKHAIL GORBACHEV, SAYING (with simultaneous translation): "Bloodshed in Europe and the Middle East against the backdrop of a breakdown in the dialogue between major powers is of enormous concern. The world is on the brink of a new Cold War, some are even saying that it has already begun. And yet while the situation is so dramatic we do not see the main international body, the UN Security Council playing any role or taking concrete action."

Gorbachev was speaking in at a memorial event in Berlin where he will join world leaders on Sunday to commemorate the 1989 fall of the Berlin Wall that ended the Cold War and led to the reunification of Germany.

Philippines remembers thousands killed in Hayian

Friends and family of some of thousands killed in typhoon Hayian in the Philippines last year gathered at a cemetery to remember their loved ones. At least 6300 people died when Hayian slammed into the country last year. Here in Tacloban, one of the worst hit regions, some 3000 graves are blessed by priests during a Catholic mass. Delia Torres lost her husband.

Elsewhere in Tacloban Saturday- outrage over the handling of recovery efforts. Protesters burned effigies and accused government officials of mishandling funds allocated for relief. More than 14.5 million people were affected by the storm in 44 provinces. More than four million people still remain homeless.

Protesters, police clash in France

Demonstrations turned violent in Toulouse Saturday during a protest against the death of another demonstrator who was allegedly killed by police two weeks ago. The gathering of about 400 people escalated into a violent confrontation with protesters hurling projectiles and riot police firing tear gas. Saturday's demonstration was in protest of the death of 21 year old Remi Fraisse was found dead in late October with a wound to his back after a standoff with police. Fraisse was part of a demonstration against a proposed dam project in southern France.Tests on Fraisse's clothes suggest he was killed by grenade which have been used by police to disperse riots, although the devices were not previously thought capable of killing someone.
