US Secretary of State John Kerry has defended the release of five Taliban detainees in exchange for Bowe Bergdahl, the only American soldier held captive in Afghanistan.
In a interview with CNN, Kerry said it would have been "offensive and incomprehensible" to consciously leave an American behind. Bergdahl was released on May 31st in exchange for the release of five Taliban militants from the US military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
Kerry also tried to ease concerns that the five prisoners would pose threat to the US again, by urging people to believe in the capacity of the US to protect its citizens. He said the five would be monitored closely, and by more people than officials in Qatar, where they were flown after being released.
