Militants release 23 children held in Central African Republic

They're only teenagers. Yet these children in the Central African Republic are already victims in their country's conflict. The U.N. says militants recruited them for fighting and even sexual exploitation.

Some had a combative role but some were taking on the role of assisting the military, cleaning weapons, cleaning their homes and so on. And sometimes girls were unfortunately used as women."

Released this week, 23 children between the ages of 14 and 17 must now readjust to life outside the militant camps. The U.N. now hopes to reunite them with their families.

As firefighters in California work to contain a dangerous wildfire near Los Angeles, some families still haven't been allowed to return to their homes. Those living in the Mountain Cove community in Azusa had to spend another night away.

With the fire 30 percent contained, evacuation orders remain in place for this foothill community because of fears of a flare up. Some residents got a police escort back to their homes to grab necessities like medication and clothes.

Iranian diplomat killed after resisting kidnap

An Iranian diplomat is killed after resisting gunmen who were trying to kidnap him. The gunmen then fled. He wasn't far from the ambassador's residence, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said. This young man saw the attempted kidnapping:

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) WITNESS TAHA SHARHAN, SAYING: "A car intercepted the diplomat's car and then four armed people got out of the car and one of them broke the window of the diplomat's car, and tried to pull out the diplomat from his car but he resisted, then the attacker shot him with four bullets."

Security sources say the diplomat was traveling in a car that belonged to the Iranian embassy. The ambassador was not in the car at the time of the attack. Sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shi'ites has been increasing in northern Yemen over the last several months. Iran is the leading Shi'ite Muslim power in the Middle East.
