极端热浪侵袭澳大利亚
Any respite is welcome, against a blistering heat wave that has settled over Australia's south and southeast. The temperature in Melbourne is expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday. In Adelaide, it could reach 46 Celsius, whereby it will earn the distinction of being the world's hottest city. A climate change watchdog warns that Australia can expect longer and hotter periods of extreme heat. Analysts say prolonged heat waves would threaten Australia's agricultural production.

Tourism hit by Bangkok protests
曼谷抗议活动影响旅游业
Thailand's precious tourist industry is starting to reel from the impact of political unrest. The country's Hotels Association said the number of tourists in Bangkok has fallen. Arrivals in December were up 6.7 percent from last year, but usually the growth is double-digit. A French tourist on holiday with his wife said the blockades were a nuisance.

Lines of tents pitched in front of five-star hotels have been seen before, and the Thai economy has proven resilient to unrest. During protests that turned violent in 2010, the economy still posted 7.8 percent growth, and the tourism sector grew by 12 percent. But this time, the protests are dragging into a third month, with no end in sight.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT DEPUTY SPOKESPERSON MARIE HARF, SAYING: "As we have repeatedly said, there was no specific threat indicating an attack was coming. Obviously we've talked at length about the fact that we knew there were extremists and terrorists operating in Libya, and in Benghazi. But again, we had no specific information indicating a threat- an attack was coming..."
The Senate Intelligence Committee maintains that U.S. intelligence agencies had warned of a deteriorating security situation in eastern Libya in the months before the attack.
参议院情报委员会坚持称,袭击发生前几个月,美国情报机构已经警告利比亚东部安全形势逐渐恶化 。
