Protesters amass in Thai capital
泰国首都大量抗议者聚集
Protesters in the Thai capital Bangkok have swelled to the tens of thousands for a massive anti-government demonstration. Members and supporters of the country's Democrat Party are marching through the streets to halt traffic and close government offices in an attempt to force out Prime Minister Yinkluck Shinawatra. Here a group of employees from the Ministry of Labour vacate the building. Demonstrators then chain the facility so no one can re-enter. The upheaval is the culmination of weeks of similar protests. Besides Yingluck's ouster, the demonstrators want snap elections originally set for early February to be pushed back to May. Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said both sides need to compromise to reach a solution.

(SOUNDBITE) (Thai) FORMER THAI PRIME MINISTER AND LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION DEMOCRAT PARTY, ABHISIT VEJJAJIVA SAYING: "The first thing that the prime minister (Yingluck Shinawatra) should do is to consider the proposal from the Election Commission. Right now, whatever they (the government) have planned is not working anymore. Every side should turn to each other and find the legal and constitutional way out. All sides could choose a way out that will avoid confrontation and is still in line with the constitution, as well as put reforms in place and an election that everyone can agree upon."

So far the demonstrations have been relatively peaceful. Protesters have said they would call off the action if violence escalated into civil war.

Iran nuclear deal to take effect on January 20

Officials say the first step to a nuclear deal between Iran and six major powers will come into effect on January 20. The Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister made the announcement on television:

An Iranian official said that after the interim deal takes effect, Tehran and world powers will start negotiating a final settlement… In hopes of settling their differences about activity the West suspects is aimed at obtaining a nuclear weapons capability. U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry said the next phase would be "very difficult":

Haitians commemorate victims of devastating quake

Four years ago, a catastrophic 7.0 earthquake shook Haiti to its core. Today, Haitians pay tribute to over 300,000 lives lost. Small ceremonies were held in various parts of the country. Haitian President Michel Martelly laid a wreath at the mass grave site. In Port-au-Prince's tent city, song and dance rang out. Hundreds of thousands still remain in tent cities like this one. And for people that live here, the lack of government response is taking its toll.
