1. in the grip of :受......的控制(支配)
e.g. She felt herself in the grip of sadness she could not understand.
她感到处于一种不可名状的悲哀之中。
e.g. The whole of London was in the grip of an influenza epidemic.

e.g. All China was in the grip of a deep cold outbreak.

2. at once:马上,立刻,立即

3. on duty:值班,值岗

e.g. A policeman has to keep on his toes all the time he's on duty.

4. let alone:更不必说
e.g. It is cabin is uninhabitable in summer,let alone in winter.
他的小屋连夏天都不好住,更不用说在冬天住了。
e.g. We fear no death, let alone difficulties.
我们死都不怕,何况困难?
e.g. I'm so sick today that I couldn't walk as far as the kitchen, let alone go to the zoo with you.
我今天病得连厨房那么远都走不动,更不用说陪你逛动物园了。
e.g. We can't afford a bicycle, let alone a car.
我们连自行车也买不起,更不用说汽车了。
5. have something in common:有共同之处
e.g. We have something in common. I have a disfunctional family too.
看来我们有些共同点. 我的家庭也不怎么正常。
6. led sb. on:误导某人
e.g. She was sorry for him because you led him on and teased him.
她同情他,因为你误导他,玩弄他。
e.g. I accused Ethel of having led him on, of having encouraged him.
我责备埃蒂尔不应该让他其心不死、想入非非。
