USA, Canada hit by snow and ice
Winter brings snow and high winds to North America. Icy rain across much of Canada turned roads and pavements into skating rinks. Here in the Canadian city of Toronto, ice storms knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses. An estimated 350,000 customers are without electricity in eastern Canada. Media reports say power could be out until December 25th, leaving Canadians out in the cold. In the U.S., heavy snowfall, ice storms and tornadoes have caused flight delays and unsafe road conditions, wreaking havoc on Christmas travel plans. Tornado watches were issued for Tennessee, Arkansas and here in Louisiana, where powerful winds swept through the southern state scattering debris in their wake. In Monroe the facade of this bookstore was ripped away.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) WITNESS DAVID HANKS SAYING: "We heard something falling, and then we saw the letters falling, and then we saw the sides of the wall falling, and then I saw the transformer over there blew up and flashed everywhere. The glass started shattering." In the U.S. alone more than 700 flights have been cancelled and more than 11,000 delayed.
Six injured, others missing as cargo train derails in Kenya
A cargo train bound for Uganda derailed Sunday in one of Kenya's poorest neighborhoods injuring at least six people -- with more feared hurt. The train had two engines and was pulling 22 wagons loaded with wheat to be delivered in Uganda. Police say the conditions on the rail line were slippery and the train gave way, crashing onto structures alongside it. Authorities fear more people may have been hurt in the accident.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) KENYA POLICE OFFICER, ADONIJIA DIANGA, SAYING: "So far we have removed about six victims, who are still breathing, but so far they are in a stable condition. We still do not know whether there are others who could have been trapped inside, so we are waiting for the crane to come and lift these wagons and the engine to see if there is anybody lying underground."
Landlocked Uganda uses Kenyan ports for delivery of goods and trains are considered to be a safer way of moving cargo to Uganda than roads.

Seleka rebels blame the lynching on the Christian militia anti-Balaka. Recent violence has been heard in the city's PK12 neighborhood and beyond. It wasn't immediately clear who started the fighting, or how many people were injured overnight. One resident says the Seleka rebels started shooting to scare the population.
