Runners take over streets at New York City Marathon
纽约市马拉松开赛 安保措施增强

Some 48,000 runners turn out for the annual New York City Marathon, which was canceled last year after Superstorm Sandy devastated the area. Massive security measures were in place after three people were killed and 260 injured at the Boston Marathon in April. An additional 1,400 surveillance cameras were added to the streets of New York. Off the course, scuba divers checked for explosives under city bridges and helicopters provided overhead surveillance. Geoffrey Mutai of Kenya was the first man to cross the finish line at 2 hours, 8 minutes and 24 seconds. Priscah Jeptoo won the women's race in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 7 seconds.

Khamenei tells Iran's hardliners not to undermine nuclear talks
最高领袖警告强硬派勿破坏核谈

As crowds gather in Tehran, Iran's Supreme Leader offers strong backing to President Hassan Rouhani's push for nuclear negotiations. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's comments will help shield Rouhani, who has sought to thaw relations with the West.

Iran will resume negotiations with six world powers, including the United States, in Geneva Thursday. The talks are aimed at ending a standoff over its nuclear work that Tehran denies is weapons-related. Hardline factions have resisted calls from moderate forces to drop the "Death to America" chant, often heard at Friday prayers throughout Iran. Khamenei says while he is not optimistic about the outcome of talks -- he sees no downside to holding the negotiations. Rouhani hopes a deal there will mean an end to sanctions that have cut the OPEC country's oil exports and hurt the wider economy. But any concession that looks like Iran is compromising on what it sees as its sovereign rights will be strongly resisted by conservatives.

Anger over Egypt tv show suspension
埃及电视节目停播引发愤怒

jzq&gQK]PCNKeJm

Angry protesters take to the streets of Cairo over the cancellation of a satirical tv show critical of the Egyptian military. Several dozen turned out to demonstrate as night fell on Saturday. Bassem Youssef's show was pulled off air on Friday, a week after he poked fun at the army chief who ousted Islamist President Mohamed Mursi. An anchor on the CBC channel said the previous episode had caused public discontent and violated editorial policy. Yet Youssef's criticism of General Abdel-Fatah al-Sisi was mild compared to the jokes he aimed at the ousted president. But this is a time of intense nationalism when the Egyptian media has been almost uniformly fawning in its coverage of Sisi. Critics say the military is tightening its grip on power and returning the natino to its previous era of iron-fisted rule, an allegation it rejects.
