US And Iran Leaders In Historic Conversation

The telephone exchange could reflect a major step in resolving global concerns over Tehran's disputed nuclear programme.

At the end of an extraordinary diplomatic week, Barack Obama casually drops a historic bombshell.

Just now I spoke on the phone with president Rouhani of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Momentus enough but with those words also an optimism, however guarded, that the two leaders can do business together.

While there were surely be important obstacles to move forward and success is by no means guaranteed. I believe we can reach a comprehensive solution.

The president was beaten to breaking the news by his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani who did so on twitter. The White House catching up with this photo. The fifteen-minute phone call could change history. The first conversation between any U.S. and Iranian president for more than three decades, conducted while Hassan Rouhani was heading for the airport in New York before flying home.

Iran and America have been arch enemies since 1979 in the country's Islamic revolution. H and his regime openly hostile after years of U.S. medaling in their nation. But most recently, Iran's alleged nuclear weapons program has been the biggest cause of friction with the West. At the itination this week in New York, Iran's new president, Hassan Rouhani repeated his country's denial, is developing the bomb.

Now nation should possess nuclear weapons because there are no right hands for these wrong weapons.

But American politicians on Capital Hill are deeply skeptical about those claims and warning the president not to fall for them.

Diplomatic sources have told us that members of Congress have been lobbied hard all week by Israel and its allys, telling them the Iranians can't be trusted. Overcoming those kinds of suspicions will be one of Barack Obama's biggest challenges as he pursues with Iran.
