1984
Padon S. One example of the popular opinion as a poor guide is George Orwell's 1984. In this novel, very one is being watched and controlled by Big Brother. Big Brother's government is very oppressive and tries to eliminate all chances of rebellion. They are even creating a new language called newspeak that eliminate all words that could threaten the government's power. The main character, Winston Smith, starts to resent Big Brother and he starts to rebel by writing in a diary and getting a girlfriend. These actions would not be looked down upon in the real world, but in this novel they are very illegal. Eventually, Winston gets caught doing these very illegal things and is taught to love Big Brother again. In this case, the opinion of the majority is obviously a poor guide as it prohibits humans from any kind of individuality or freedom, Although Winston's rebellion against the opinion of the majority does not make any difference in his world, it ws important for him to rebel in order top show just how poor a guide the majority's opinion is.
