Upon reaching California, they find there are hordes of applicants for every job, and thus, little hope of finding a stable income from which to live, let alone find a house and a steady job. In Steinbeck's work, it is the reality of life, versus the Joad's preconceived fantasies of life as a migrant worker in California, that serves as the unexpected element in the Joad's seemingly flawless plan.
