Now, let’s take a closer look at the profile of the newly-approved vice premiers.
Zhang Gaoli began his career in the oil industry before becoming an official in Guangdong Province in the 1980s. He spent 12 years working his way up there, eventually becoming the Party Secretary in the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen in Guangdong. Then, Zhang served as the governor and Party Secretary in Shandong Province before being appointed party chief of Tianjin in 2007. Tianjin Municipality is a two-hour drive from the capital. In November 2012, he was elected as a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Politburo.
Liu Yandong has 9 years working experience in the Communist Youth League Central Committee, and 16 years working experience of the United Front Work Department under the CPC Central Committee. And she is the only female member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee.
Wang Yang is seen as a reformer. China has seen evidence of this since the late 1980s when he worked as the head of Tongling city in Anhui Province, where he called for reform of the old system. He became the deputy governor of Anhui Province in 1993. And he is also China’s youngest deputy provincial governor. In 2005, he was appointed party chief of Chongqing municipality, after which he was transferred to Guangdong province in 2007, where he served as the Party chief there until the end of 2012. While there he encouraged reform and opening-up of the province.
Ma Kai started his working career in the price bureau sector. He became deputy director of the National Bureau of Prices in 1988 and served as Deputy secretary-general of the State Council ten years later. He is the Director of the National Development and Reform Commission in 2003. He was elected as a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee in 2012.
