But does this actually mean we are floating above the ground?

So, your cousin is graduating from high school this year. Has she decided on a college?

She hasn't decided on anything yet. All her college plans are up in the air.
她还没做好决定。她的所有大学计划还没确定下来。
She doesn't even know what she wants to study!

She had better get on it!

If something is up in the air, it is undecided and uncertain.
如果某事飘浮在天空，就意味着未决定或者是不确定。
If an object is floating through the air,
如果某物飘浮在天空之上，
it is hard to know where it is going, which is where this expression comes from.
很难知道它要飘向何处，这就是这个表达的由来。
In the past, people just said in the air.
在过去，人们只用in the air这种表达。
But in the mid-1900s, we added "up", making it up in the air.
但到了20世纪中期，人们加上了“up”这个词，从而变为了Up In The Air。
