Susan: Anything interesting in today's newspaper?

Irene: Just the usual stuff. Wait, here is a short report about a festival called "the Water-Sprinkling Festival" of the Dai ethnicity.

Susan: I think I've heard that before. As I understand it, the more water you get, the happier you will be.

Irene: Yes, but why would people sprinkle water on others to express their good wishes?

Irene: It says it's the water that is supposed to wash the Buddha first so becomes auspicious. It is a way of washing away the old year and ushering in a new one. The Festival became well-known after Premier Zhou participated in the event.
艾琳：报纸上说这些水是先用来礼佛的，所以是吉祥的水。人们以这种方式辞旧迎新。周总理曾参加过泼水节，后来泼水节就被很多人熟知了。
Irene: People do such intriguing ways to celebrate the new year.
艾琳：人们庆祝新年的方式还真是有意思啊。
