18th AU Summit continues in Ethiopia
The 18th African Union Summit has entered its last day in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa. This year’s theme is "Boosting Intra-African Trade." Leaders and delegates from some 50 members of the union are focusing on boosting trade, amid growing global economic uncertainty.
The summit is set to elect a new chairman for the African Union Commission for the next four years, with South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s challenging incumbent Jean Ping from Gabon. The current members are ending their four year term this month.
The UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon expressed his gratitude to China for funding the organisation’s new Conference Center on Sunday. The two day summit is also expected to outline plans for a Free Trade Zone across the African continent, set to be established by 2017.
