Unit 23 Conflict Culture Corner
School Counsellors Counsellors offer help, advice and support to people who find it difficult to help themselves. In the West, particularly in North America, it is common for schools to have their own counsellors. School counsellors help students deal with social, academic, behavioural and neraonal problems. They work closely with parents, teachers, doctors social workers and psychologiststo make sure students are healthy, happy and doing their best at school and at home.
Children of different ages have different problems and needs, so the job of a school counsellor can be very diverse and demanding.
Elementary School Counsellors in elementary schools spend most of their time observing young students in class. Their job is to identify any children with behavioural problems or special learning needs. Some children have more difficulty learning than others. Sometimes, because of problems at home, children have difficulty interacting with their classmates or teachers. It is the job of the school counsellor to identify and help these students
start their academic careers in the best possible way.
