But philosophers are always trying to climb up the fine hairs of the fur, in order to look into the magician's eyes. Are you still there Sophie? To be continued. A few days later Sophie receives another letter from the philosopher. In it, he (or she!) tells Sophie more about the white rabbit and the magic trick. He says people are born at the end of the rabbit's hairs, and think about the impossibility of the trick. But as they get older many people go deeper into the rabbit's fur. They get really comfortable, and stop asking questions about life, about the universe. Sophie thought hard about this all afternoon. When Sophie's Mum got home at five o'clock, Sophie started to ask her questions."Mum, don't you think it's amazing to be alive," she began. Her mother was so surprised that she didn't answer at first. Sophie was usually doing her homework when she got home. "I suppose I do, sometimes," she said. "Sometimes? Yes, but don't you think it's amazing that the world exists at all?"
