Tanks have again been filmed rolling through the streets of the Sudanese capital Khartoum, but the intensity of the fighting between the army and a paramilitary force appeared to have diminished late on Monday.

The army said the scope of what it called its security operation against the Rapid Support Forces was widening, and that would further restrict movement.

Both the army and the Rapid Support Forces claim to have made gains after a third day of clashes.

What's certain is that the real losers are the people of Sudan.

They've been deprived of essential services and are living in fear as the rival forces struggle for control with apparently little thought for the sanctity of human life.

There's little dignity for the dead, too, with mourners unable to take victims to cemeteries in Khartoum and forced to bury them where they fallen.

Though there was a lull in the fighting early on Tuesday few expected to last.
