The United States has completed its withdrawl from Afghanistan, ending America's longest war. The Islamic State group's Afghanistan affiliate is claiming responsibility for targeting the Kabul airport with rockets, but the U.S. military reports no American casualties.
People have been told to flee from a section of the Lake Tahoe shoreline as a huge forest fire threatens to push into the resort area on the California-Nevada border. The fire has grown to more than 277 square miles. Forecasters are warning of critical fire weather through Tuesday.
Hurricane Ida has weakened to a tropical storm as it pushes inland over Mississippi, leaving scores of Louisiana residents trapped or without power. No major flooding was reported inside the flood control system that protects New Orleans.
An Air Force Reserve aircraft flew through the eye of Hurricane Ida Sunday as it made landfall as a Category 4 storm in Louisiana. The plane pierced through clouds and into the center of one of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland.
