The world's two largest economies are still showing no sign of engaging in trade talks one day after they launched tariffs on each other's goods. Washington fired the first shot. Collecting duties of 25% on Chinese products were 34 billion U.S. dollars on Friday. The tariffs also target sectors like aerospace, IT, auto parts and medical equipment.
In retaliation, China will impose levies of the same scale including on cars, agricultural products and aquatic products. China has also launched an additional complaint with the World Trade Organization. The Trump administration hasn't just targeted China with tariffs. Traditional trade partners like Germany, Canada and Mexico have also come out to strongly condemn such US actions. The danger that one hurts himself is higher than hurting others. The likelihood is that everyone gets hurt and that I believe we should avoid and do everything we can.
