The bill blocks local law enforcement from communicating with federal immigration officials about a person's immigration status with several exceptions for more serious crimes.
But California Sheriffs Association Chief Donny Youngblood says preventing communication is not good for public safety:
(Youngblood) "This bill is nothing about us and immigration, it's about anti-Trump."
He says it will likely have an effect the bill's supporters won't like:
(Youngblood) "ICE is going to go into our communities and they're going to find them and when they do, they are going to take everyone in the residence, they're in the country illegally, they're hard working farm workers or janitors and they're going to take all of them."
He says he hopes the federal government sues California over this bill.
