33-year-old Nordine Amrani fired bullets and hurled grenades before killing himself, and in the process, he killed two teenage boys and a toddler of just 18 months. More than 120 others were injured.
Michel Born, a psychology professor at Liege University, says Amrani's behavior reflects his view of life.
"He probably developed some kind of paranoid way of looking at life, and to have a collection of something like weapons is certainly a way for him to compensate for something, so that makes him a very singular person."
Officials have ruled out organized political terrorism or a known mental illness as Amrani's motives.
