Lesson 14 Dialogue Active Listener
Ciara: Working at a start-up has always been my dream! However, things here seem a little flat. We lack crisp communication.
Holt: Tell me about it! Our manager seems to talk in circles about "next phase" development, but we never really get there.
Ciara: On the surface, he has so much composure. Such a cool guy, I admit. However, he has a way to tilt the discussion in his favor.
Plus, if you ask a direct question, he digresses off-topic, so I never hear anything quite relevant.
Holt: Furthermore, he seems to have an aversion to risk and making far-reaching compromises between the different visions suggested.
Ciara: True, running a company is a balancing act, but he seems a bit too self-absorbed for that.
Holt: I don't mind some hierarchy as a way of managing, but in reality, workers gather around a de facto leader, the person who naturally inspires and gathers people.
Ciara: Well, if he just endorsed one or two ideas coming from the bottom, I think he would win our immediate respect.
Holt: That would certainly prevent any impasse in the creative process.
Ciara: Reminds me of the quip: Things need management, but people need leadership.
Holt: Wow! Food for thought! Somebody should write that on the letterhead!
