Torrential Rain, Flooding Wreak Havoc at Dubai Airport
The most severe flooding in decades caused a wave of flight cancellations and delays at Dubai International Airport, prompting the world’s second-busiest hub to warn passengers to avoid it unless absolutely necessary.
Some 256 millimeters of rain, equivalent to around 10 inches, the most in 75 years, drenched the United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, according to the country’s National Center of Meteorology, leaving highways besieged by rainwater and prompting schools to close. In neighboring Oman, downpours over recent days have caused the deaths of at least 18 people, authorities there have said.
Dubai Airport asked passengers not to arrive at the hub on Wednesday and warned that it would take “some time” for operations to normalize. Emirates, the world’s biggest long-haul carrier, said it had suspended check-in for all flights departing from Dubai from early Wednesday until midnight. Passengers already at the airport, or arriving there on connecting flights, will still be processed for their flights, the carrier said.
