On Wednesday, the Korean traditional mask dance, also known as 'talchum' was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

the committee decided to add talchum, the South Korean mask dance drama, to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

After examining South Korea's nomination, the committee noted that "the element is manifested through the oral traditions, performing arts, social practices and rituals of its dances, music and theater and the traditional craftsmanship of the masks",

adding that talchum's message of universal equality and criticism of social hierarchy is still relevant today.

The latest addition raised the number of South Korean entries on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage lists to 22, after the Lantern Lighting Festival, or "Yeondeunghoe" in Korean, was added to the list in 2020.
