"That's right!" shouted the Queen. "Can you play croquet?"
“好得很！”王后喊道，“你会打槌球吗？”
The soldiers were silent, and looked at Alice, as the question was evidently meant for her.
士兵们沉默不语地看了看爱丽丝，因为这问题显然是问她的。
"Yes!" shouted Alice.
“会！”爱丽丝大声回答。
"Come on, then!" roared the Queen, and Alice joined the procession, wondering very much what would happen next.
“那么，过来！”王后又吼道，于是爱丽丝也加入到队伍之中，对下面发生的事情产生了浓厚兴趣。
"It's -- it's a very fine day!" said a timid voice at her side. She was walking by the White Rabbit, who was peeping anxiously into her face.
“今天——今天天气真不错！”她身边响起一个胆怯的声音。她正好走在白兔的身旁，而那白兔正在惴惴不安地偷看她的脸色。
"Very," said Alice: " -- where's the Duchess?"
“很不错，”爱丽丝说，“——公爵夫人在哪儿？”
"Hush! Hush!" said the Rabbit in a low, hurried tone. He looked anxiously over his shoulder as he spoke, and then raised himself upon tiptoe, put his mouth close to her ear, and whispered "She's under sentence of execution."
“嘘！嘘！”白兔急忙低声说，边说边担心地朝后望了望，然后踮起脚尖，把嘴凑近爱丽丝的耳边，悄悄地说，“她被判了死刑。”
"What for?" said Alice.
“因为什么？”爱丽丝问。
"Did you say ‘What a pity!'?" the Rabbit asked.
“你刚才是说‘真遗憾’吗？”白兔问。
"No, I didn't," said Alice: "I don't think it's at all a pity. I said 'What for?'"
“不，我没那么说，”爱丽丝回答，“我根本不认为这有什么可遗憾的。我是问‘因为什么’。”
"She boxed the Queen's ears -- " the Rabbit began. Alice gave a little scream of laughter. "Oh, hush!" the Rabbit whispered in a frightened tone. "The Queen will hear you! You see, she came rather late, and the Queen said -- "
“她打了王后一个耳光——”白兔开口道。爱丽丝一下笑出了声。“噢，嘘！”白兔害怕地悄声耳语，“王后会听见的！你知道，她来得太晚了，于是王后就说——”
"Get to your places!" shouted the Queen in a voice of thunder, and people began running about in all directions, tumbling up against each other; however, they got settled down in a minute or two, and the game began.
“各就各位！”王后雷鸣般地高喊了一声，于是人们相互东碰西撞地四下跑开了。不过，不一会儿他们总算站好了位子，比赛开始了。
Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet-ground in her life; it was all ridges and furrows; the balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, and the soldiers had to double themselves up and to stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches.
爱丽丝觉得她这辈子也没见过这么奇怪的槌球场地：到处是沟沟坎坎，槌球是些活的刺猬，球杆是些活的火烈鸟，而士兵们则不得不把身体弯折成拱形，头脚着地当球门。
The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo: she succeeded in getting its body tucked away, comfortably enough, under her arm, with its legs hanging down,
爱丽丝一开始就发现首要难题是摆弄她的火烈鸟，她成功地把它的身子一窝，舒舒服服地塞到了自己的胳膊底下，让它的两条腿朝下耷拉着，
but generally, just as she had got its neck nicely straightened out, and was going to give the hedgehog a blow with its head, it would twist itself round and look up in her face, with such a puzzled expression that she could not help bursting out laughing:
可每当她刚一把它的脖子优雅地直起来，准备用它的头去打刺猬时，它就会扭转回身抬头望着她的脸。一看到那迷惑的表情，爱丽丝就忍不住要放声大笑。
and when she had got its head down, and was going to begin again, it was very provoking to find that the hedgehog had unrolled itself, and was in the act of crawling away:
而等爱丽丝把它的头按下去要重新开始时，又很恼火地发现刺猬已经展开了身子，正准备爬走。
besides all this, there was generally a ridge or furrow in the way wherever she wanted to send the hedgehog to, and, as the doubled-up soldiers were always getting up and walking off to other parts of the ground, Alice soon came to the conclusion that it was a very difficult game indeed.
这还不算，不管她沿什么路线打刺猬球，总会碰上个沟呀或坎儿的，而且，由于那些弯下身子的士兵们老是站起身，走到场地上其他地方，爱丽丝很快就认定这是场很困难的比赛。
The players all played at once without waiting for turns, quarrelling all the while, and fighting for the hedgehogs; and in a very short time the Queen was in a furious passion, and went stamping about, and shouting "Off with his head!" or "Off with her head!" about once in a minute.
参加比赛的人不是按次序打球，而是一刻不停地争吵，为了争到刺猬球还动手打架。没多久，王后就大发雷霆，跺着脚走来走去，大喊着“砍了他的头！”或是“砍了她的头！”差不多一分钟就喊一次。
Alice began to feel very uneasy: to be sure, she had not as yet had any dispute with the Queen, but she knew that it might happen any minute, "and then," thought she, "what would become of me? They're dreadfully fond of beheading people here; the great wonder is, that there's any one left alive!"
爱丽丝感到很不安了。确实，到现在为止她还没有和王后发生过一次争吵，但是她知道这随时都可能发生。“那么，”她寻思着，“我会怎么样呢？他们这儿可太喜欢砍头了，最令人费解的是，还能有人活下来！”
