This is Everyday Grammar.
这里是《每日语法》节目。
And today is a large day.
今天是个巨大日子。
No, that doesn't quite sound right.
不对,这么说听起来不对。
I mean a big day.
我的意思是,大日子。
In English, we use the phrase "big day" but not "large day".
在英语中我们使用短语“big day”,而不是“large day”。
But why?
但是为什么呢?
The answer is collocation.
答案是固定搭配。
And that's the subject of today's program.
这就是今天节目的主题。
A collocation is a group of two or more words that is almost always used together.
固定搭配是两个或两个以上的几乎总是一起使用的单词构成的词组。
Here are a few more examples: heavy rain, major decision, break a habit, and make a mistake.
这里还有一些例子:大雨,重大决定,打破习惯,犯错误。
It would sound strange if someone said: huge rain, leading decision, discontinue a habit or do a mistake.
如果有人这么说,听起来就会很奇怪:巨雨,领导决定,使一个习惯不连续,做一个错误。
Many people might understand the meaning but native English speakers would not combine words in this way.
很多人或许能理解它的意思,但英语母语者不会这样组合单词。
Like in many languages, some words just go together in English and some don't.
就像在很多语言中一样,英语中有些词是连在一起使用的,有些则不是。
There is no grammatical reason.
没有语法上的原因。
So, knowing that "major decision" is a collocation, for example, is not something you could easily guess.
所以,你并不会那么容易就想到“major decision”是一种固定搭配。
And some English words can have many collocation.
有些英语单词可以有很多固定搭配。
For instance, decision can also be used in big decision, difficult decision, final decision, and others.
例如,决定也可以用在重大决定,困难的决定,最终决定,和其他词组中。
Improving your use of collocation will help your English sound more natural, which will make you more easily understood.
提高你使用固定搭配的能力,会使你的英语听起来更自然,你也将更容易被理解。
So, in future lessons, I'll give you tips for ways to practice.
所以,在未来的课程中,我会教你一些练习的技巧。
And that's Everyday Grammar.
