Recently, my friend was telling me about a restaurant.

It has common kinds of American food.
这家店里有常见的美国食物。
The restaurant has hamburgers and hot dogs and stuff like that.
那家餐馆有汉堡、热狗之类的东西。
My friend's statement made me think about "and stuff like that".
我朋友的话让我思考“诸如此类的事情”这个短语。
In grammar, you could call it an imprecise noun phrase.
在语法上，你可以称它为不精确的名词短语。
Americans use it often in everyday speech.
美国人在日常用语中经常使用它。
Rather than listing a long series of nouns, Americans often use one or two nouns
美国人通常不会列出一长串名词，而是使用一两个名词，
and then say "and stuff like that" to show that there are other possible nouns they could have said.
然后说“诸如此类的”来表示还有其他可能的名词。
Why would they do this?
为什么他们要这么说呢？
Are americans just too lazy to say all the nouns they are thinking of?
美国人是不是太懒了，懒得说他们想到的所有名词?
Imagine if my friend had decided to list all the foods at the restaurant.
想象一下，如果我的朋友决定列出这家餐馆的所有食物。
The restaurant has hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, and pizza, and lasagna, and spaghetti, catfish, and...

The next time you are watching an American film or listening to American speak, try to find examples of "and stuff like that".
下次你看美国电影或听美国人说话的时候，可以试着找一找类似的例子。
Ask yourself which nouns they might be replacing with the phrase.
问问自己，他们可能要用短语代替哪些名词。
