I probably use the word, well, 10 to 15 times a day.

There are many, many uses for this small but meaningful word.

Today, I'm going to tell you about three.

The first is to express mild disapproval or disagreement.
第一个用法是表达轻微的不赞成或不同意。
I can't believe I missed the bus!
真不敢相信我错过了公共汽车!
Now I'm definitely going to be late.
现在我肯定要迟到了。
Well, I told you that the bus comes at 8am sharp every morning.
看吧,我告诉过你公共汽车每天早上8点整来。
The second is to begin a story or explanation, or to continue one that was
interrupted.
第二个用法是开始一个故事或解释,或者继续一个被打断的故事。
Remember that house I was hoping to rent?
还记得我想租的那个房子吗?
Well, when we went to look at the place, people were already living there!
你猜怎么着,当我们去看房的时候,已经有人住在那里了!
And the third is to show that something has ended or to make a final statement
about it.
第三个用法是表明某件事已经结束了或者对它做出最后的总结陈述。
For example, suppose you see a friend on the street.
例如,假设你在街上看到一个朋友。
After a few minutes of talking, she says this:
几分钟的交谈后,她说:
Well, it was nice seeing you too!
好了,我也很高兴见到你!
I've got to jump on the metro soon.
我得赶紧去搭地铁了。
Your friend is signaling that she wants to say goodbye because she has to go now.
你的朋友在暗示她想跟你说再见,因为她现在得走了。
And your friend is not the only one who has to go.
而你的朋友不是唯一要离开的人。
