大家好,我是艾玛,欢迎收听艾玛的美味英语!

I'm here to answer each and every one of your questions today, so stay tuned!

我今天打算回答你们提出的每一个问题,所以一定要认真听讲!

……So which one is it then? Each or every?

到底是哪一个呢?Each还是every?

It's pretty easy to confuse these two words.

这两个单词很容易搞混。

They look similar, they sound similar but they're not always used in the same way.

它们看起来很相似,听起来很相似,但使用的方式并不完全相同。

So in this lesson, we'll go over the subtle and important differences between these two words.

所以本节课程,我们将学习这两个单词之间细微而又及其重要的差别。

We'll talk about the different situations where you would use one or the other and of course, we'll practise a little bit together later in the lesson.

我们会讨论你使用这两个单词的不同语境,课程结束后也会进行一些练习。

You know that I love to make my lessons for you very practical so we'll get to that later on.

大家都知道,我希望我的课程对大家而言是非常实用的,所以我们稍后就会进行练习。

Before we get started, a little reminder to turn on the subtitles if you need to just down there.

在正式开始之前,我要提醒大家,如果大家需要的话,可以打开下面的字幕。

I write subtitles for every lesson on the mmmEnglish channel so you can turn them on at any time.

我会为美味英语频道的每节课程编写字幕,这样大家就可以随时打开字幕观看视频了。

And some of my amazing students here help me to translate these lessons into their own native language

我有一些厉害的学生会帮忙把这些课程翻译成他们的母语,

so that more people can share and learn from them as well.

这样更多的人就可以分享并从中学习了。

So if you're up for the challenge to add subtitles in your native language, there's a link in the description that will help you to do that.

所以如果大家想要挑战自我,为视频添加母语字幕的话,描述区的一个链接可以帮到大家。

Your name's going to get shown in the description too as a thank you.

你的名字也将会出现在描述区,作为感谢。

'Each' and 'every' can both be used with singular nouns:

‘Each’和‘every’都可以搭配单数名词:

every day, every house, each person, each cat.

每天、每间房子、每个人、每只猫。

All of these nouns are singular, right?

这些名词都是单数

maxresdefault.jpg

It's just one person or one thing.

就是一个人或者是一个东西。

So the words 'each' and 'every' can be used with singular nouns that are part of a group but there is a subtle difference.

所以,‘each’和‘every’都可以和单数名词一起使用,并作为一个群体中的一部分,但是还是有细微区别的。

When we use 'each', it emphasizes or it puts more attention on the individual.

当我们使用‘each’的时候,它更加强调的或更加关注个体。

The one person or the one thing.

一个人或者是一件事物。

Each person who came to the dinner party brought a dish.

每个来参加晚宴的人都带来了一道菜。

More than one person came to the dinner party.

不止一个人来参加晚宴。

In fact, there was a whole group of people who came to the dinner party.

事实上,有一群人来参加晚宴。

But each singular individual person bought a dish or a plate of food to share, right?

但每个单独的个体都带了一道菜或者是一盘食物来分享,对吧?

So he bought a dish, she bought dessert, she bought a salad, he bought some cheese and biscuits, right?

他带了一道菜,她带了甜品,她带了沙拉,他带了一些芝士和饼干,对吧?

So everyone has brought something.

所以每个人都带了点东西。

Now let's compare this to 'every'.

那现在让我们把这和‘every’比较一下吧。

'Every' refers to a group of individual objects or people as one group altogether, right?

‘Every’指的是一群独立的个体或者是人,共同形成了一个团体。

The attention is on the group as a whole so everyone who came to the dinner party brought a dish.

关注点在于整个完整的群体,所以每个来晚宴的人都带了一道菜。

So a group of people came to the dinner party and all of these people brought a dish but by using 'every', I'm putting emphasis on the group as a whole, right?

所以有一群人来到了晚宴,这些人全都带了一道菜,但是使用‘every’的话,我更强调的是整个团体,是吧?

Everybody here bought a dish.

这里的每个人都带了一道菜。

Now in many situations, just like my example about the dinner party, 'each' and 'every' can be used interchangeably with just a small difference in meaning, right?

在很多情况下,就像我关于晚宴的例子一样,‘each’和‘every’可以互换使用,不过它们在意思方面会有些许不同。

You could use either of them and the difference is very subtle.

你可以使用其中的任何一个,差别非常的小。

But let's look at a few more examples to help make that clear.

但是让我们再看几个例子来弄得更清楚一点。

Every business owner is clever.

每个老板都很聪明。

So I'm putting all business owners together in one group there and I'm making a generalisation about the group—all business owners.

我把所有的老板放进了一个团体,然后对这个团体做一个抽象概括——所有的老板。

And I'm saying that as a group, all of those business owners are clever.

我说的是作为一个团体,所有的老板都很聪明。

So here I'm talking about the individual teachers at our school, each one of them is creative.

所以在这里,我讨论的是我们学校的每一个老师,他们中的每一个人都很有创造力。

Not all teachers in general, not the group together, but each teacher separately at the school is creative.

并不是总体上的所有老师,不是这个团体,而是学校的每一个老师作为独立个体都很有创造力。

Before we move on, I want to point out something really important, something you might have been thinking about already.

在我们继续之前,我想指出一件非常重要的事情,一件你们可能已经在思考的事情。

But did you notice in my earlier examples that I wrote 'everyone' instead of 'every one'?

但你有没有发现我之前举的例子中,我写的是‘everyone’而不是‘every one’呢?

So if you want to talk about a group of people as a whole, every person it's correct to use 'every one' or 'every body', right?

所以呢,如果你想谈论一群人作为一个整体的话,每个人,那么使用的应该是‘every one’或者是‘every body’。

Every person is every one or every body.

每个人是‘every one’或者是‘every body’。

Now 'every one' written in two words, it actually puts more attention on the individuals in the group and so it becomes a synonym closer to 'each', right?

‘every one’现在是写作了两个单词,它更强调的是群体中的每个个体,所以它和‘each’是形容词,对吗?

Let's think of an example.

让我们想个例子吧。

At school, did you have a teacher that you were kind of scared of?

在学校里,有没有一位你很喜欢或者是很害怕的老师?

Like imagine them saying: every one of you needs to arrive at 7am tomorrow.

想象一下他们说:你们每个人都要在早晨七点钟到学校。

Right? The emphasis is on the individual.

懂了吗?重点是个体。

But if they said: everyone needs to arrive at 7am tomorrow, then the emphasis is on the group, right?

但是如果他们说:大家都需要在早晨七点到学校,那么重点就在整个群体上,对吗?

And it's a little less scary.

有点可怕。

It's a subtle difference but it's quite powerful in meaning.

它们的差别非常细微,但是意思表达却很有力。

Notice as well that even though we're talking about a group of people, 'everyone' and 'everybody' use a singular verb form

注意,尽管我们讨论的是一群人,‘everyone’和‘everybody’使用的都是动词单数形式,

because we're talking about the group as a singular thing, right?

因为我们讨论的是整个单数的整体,对吗?

Not all of the individuals in it but we're talking about the group, right?

并不是里面的所有的个体,我们讨论的是这个整体。

A nice trick to check if you should be using 'everyone' or 'every one'

有一个小窍门可以帮助大家确定到底是应该是用‘everyone’还是‘every one’,

is to see if everybody works in that sentence because then 'everyone' with one word is also correct.

那就是看看everybody在这个句子里面是不是也是合适的,因为一个单词的‘everyone’也是对的。

If everybody doesn't work in the sentence then 'every one' with two words is the correct option, right?

如果everybody不适用于这个句子的话,那么两个单词的‘every one’就是正确的选择,对吗?

Let's look at an example.

让我们看个例子吧。

I called everybody to invite them over.

我给大家打电话邀请他们过来。

Right we can say: I called everyone to invite them over.

我们可以说:我给大家打电话邀请他们过来。

I called everybody of my friends to invite them over.

我给我的每个朋友都打了电话,邀请他们过来。

I called every one/each one of my friends to invite them over.

我给我的每个朋友都打了电话,邀请他们过来。

So let's do a quick recap before we move on.

那在继续之前让我们迅速地总结一下吧。

We use 'each' and 'every' with singular nouns.

我们使用‘each’和‘every’是和单数名词一起搭配的。

'Each' puts more emphasis on the individual within the group and 'every' puts our attention on the group as a whole.

‘Each’更加强调团体中的每个个体,‘every’更关注的是整个整体。

Got it? Good!

懂了吗?很棒!
