Once upon a time… these are the magical words most traditional tales start with,
full of castles, prince charmings, fairies and evil stepmothers..
We are gonna tell you a story today.
Hansel and Gretel’s story, one of the most popular tales collected by the Grimm brothers.
You probably all know this tale already,
and even tho the story of the chocolate house is quite macabre itself, the real story behind it is even creepier.
Let’s start with one of the many versions of the fable there is out there, and at the end, we will explain the real story.
Once upon a time, a long long time ago, in a far off land,
there was a woodcutter who lived with his two kids, Hansel and Gretel, and their step mother.
It was a very poor family who barely earned money to feed themselves.
The day came when they didn't have anything to eat, not even to buy a bit of flour to make bread,
so they started worrying because they thought the kids were gonna starve to death.
The stepmother thought there was only one solution,
leaving them in the middle of the wood near the kings palace so that somebody would find them and take care of them.
Hansel and Gretel couldn't sleep, listening to this whole conversation.
The girl started crying, but her brother told her there was a way for them to go back home,
since they’d rather starve with their parents, than live without them.
The following day, their parents woke them up to go and collect wood.
They knew what was coming, so they took with them a piece of hard bread and on the way they left a trail of breadcrumbs.
They had been walking for a long time, and they were very far from their house already.
Their parents told them they were gonna get some water from a nearby stream, and to wait for them.
But they never came back, so Hansel and Gretel decided to follow the trail of breadcrumbs back home.
They searched and searched, but they couldnt find it - the birds had eaten it all.
They were walking for a long time, lost in the woods,
until they found a house made of ginger bread, cookies, chocolate and sweets.
They were soo hungry that they couldn't help getting close to it to eat a bit of this yummy house.
Suddenly, an old woman invited them to go inside and offered them some food.
She then got the bed ready for them to sleep in.
Obviously, they accepted,
as they didnt know this house was a trap from an old and evil witch to lock them up and eat them.
She made Gretel take care of all the cooking and cleaning, while Hansel was locked inside a cage to fatten him up and eat him afterwards.
The boy ate and ate and got fatter and fatter,
but as the witch was nearly blind, when she asked him to show her a finger and check if he had gained weight,
Hansel always stuck out a chicken bone.
A loong time went by, the witch got tired, and decided to eat him anyway.
She asked Gretel to turn on the oven to cook the kid, but the little girl told her she didnt know how to do it.
And then, when the witch got close to the oven, the girl pushed her inside it,
so both kids were finally set free.
They decided to go back home,
but before doing so, they found a lot of gold and gem stones they collected to take home to their parents.
On their way back, suddenly they found their dad cutting wood and showed him alll they had found,
so they went home together and lived happily ever after.
The End.
The origin of Hansel and Gretel’s tale comes from the Middle Ages.
According to different analysis of the original story, the main focus of the Grimm’s tale is the hunger that reigned during that historical period full of shortage.
Hansel and Gretel’s parents didnt just abandon them,
they found themselves forced to separate their kids from them, to avoid the temptation of eating them.
During the Medieval Times, hunger was so intense that cannibalism turned into an actual possibility.
The witch that lives inside the house made of candy doesnt really exist,
it’s an invention to soften the real story and hide the figure of the mother wanting to eat them.
She also turns into an evil stepmother - a mother abandoning their kids is too hard to do.
During those times, it wasnt weird at all to take kids to the woods, taking them away from their family to make them grow up, where they were forced to survive, stealing whatever they found.
In the story, Hansel and Gretel loot the chocolat house.
Classical tales are not always what they seem to be,
and most of the times they hide the harsh reality of the time period they are original from.
