These are all questions that I get asked all the time by my students!

And in this video I'm going to answer them for you.

So the first question.

Do you need to know the difference between American English and British English?
你需要知道美式英语和英式英语的区别吗？
Well you need to know that there are differences.
没错，你需要知道美式英语和英式英语有区别。
There are a few different spelling rules, grammar rules and of course there's different accents and vocabulary.
有一些不同的拼写规则、语法规则，当然还有不同的口音和词汇。
You need to know that there are those differences
你需要知道这两种英语存在这些差异，
but that doesn't necessarily mean that you need to study and learn them.
但是那并不意味着你一定需要学习并了解这些规则。
The truth is that all English speakers understand each other, despite the differences in their English.
事实是，所有说英语的人都能够互相理解，尽管他们的英语存在着差异。
We watch each other's movies, we read each other's books, we work with each other, we read each other's news.
我们会看对方的电影，我们会读对方的书，我们会一起工作，我们会阅读对方的新闻。
So we're often exposed to the different words and spellings that other English speakers use..

which brings me to the next question.

Should you care about the differences between American English and British English?
你该不该在意美式英语和英式英语的差别？
Maybe.

It depends on why you're learning English.
这取决于你学习英语的原因。
You only need to care about the differences
只有以下的原因，你才需要了解差别，
if you're studying for an English exam, you're applying for or attending an English university or you're using English professionally for your job.
如果你正在进行英语考试、正在申请、或者是马上要去说英语的学校学习，或者是你的工作场合用得到职业英语
Usually in these situations, you need to pay attention to the spelling and the grammar rules because it can affect your score or even affect your reputation.
通常在这些情况中，你需要注意拼写和语法规则，因为它能够影响你的得分，甚至是影响到你的名声。
So if this sounds like you, then you definitely do need to think about whether British English or American English is the right choice for you.
如果你的情况就是这样的话，那你是真的非常需要思考英式英语和美式英语，哪个对你而言才是正确的选择。
So which one is right? Which one should you use?
哪个才是正确的呢？你应该使用哪一种呢？
It's a hard question for me to answer.

You need to think about you and your situation.
你需要基于自己，考虑你自己的情况。
Are you living in an English-speaking country?
你居住在说英语的国家吗？
Then of course, use the type of English that is used there.
那么当然要使用你的居住地所使用的那种英语。
But maybe you're planning to study in an English-speaking country.
但是可能你正在计划去说英语的国家学习。
Which one?
哪一个国家呢？
If it's America, then you should be training to learn American English.
如果是美国的话，那你应该学习美式英语。
But if not, then focus on British English
但是如果不是的话，那么就专攻英式英语吧，
because most other English-speaking countries use British English grammar and spelling standards.
因为大多数其他的说英语国家都使用英式英语语法和拼写标准。
Do you speak to a lot of clients or colleagues who are from America or from the UK?
你需要沟通的客户或同事是美国人还是英国人呢？
This can help you to decide whether you need to study American English or British English.
这能够帮助你决定你需要学习英式英语还是美式英语。
You might think that one type of English is easier than the other and that can also tell you which one you should study.
你可能觉得其中一种可能比另外一种简单，那也能够告诉你你应该学习哪一种。
You could choose any of these reasons to help you decide which type of English to study.
