Dialogue 1
Jingjing: Mark, are you going to pick out a spot along the street and watch the parade?
Mark: I like parades. But I'm afraid it will be too much of a mob scene.
Jingjing: Yeah, and it might be hard to get in and out of the area.
Mark: Oh well. Last time, there was big parade for the V-Day anniversary, and I stayed in my room outside the 5th Ring and watched it on an iPad.
Jingjing: Aww, man. You were too far away even to see the planes in the sky.
Mark: Right, I was north of the city. And the planes were flying east to west. What about you?
Jingjing: Well, where I was living, and where I still live, is a little more centrally located than that. I got to see a few jet flyovers from my window. That was pretty awesome.
Mark: Wow. I like seeing military planes, especially fighters. I heard that the J-20 is supposed to make an appearance at this parade.
Jingjing: You mean the Chengdu J-20 stealth fighter jet? I read about that. Also, the Xi'an H-6K bomber might make an appearance. People claimed to have seen it in rehearsals. But I'm not really sure.
Mark: That'd be quite a sight. I have yet to see a bomber in flight, or even hear one, come to think of it. What do you think will be the most interesting part?
Jingjing: I liked seeing the squadron of helicopters in 2015.
Mark: Oh yeah, they flew over with those huge flags. That was pretty impressive.
Jingjing: Also, this year, they're going to fly in formation, as the number 70. Someone posted a video of that from a rehearsal.
Mark: Man, it really would be better to stand on Chang'an and see all that roll by and fly over.
Jingjing: Would you really want to stand in the sun for so long?
Mark: I might. But it's also good to watch it from home and eat snacks whenever I want them.
Jingjing: Ha ha. Well, wherever you are, I hope you enjoy it!

Dialogue 2
Jingjing: Mark, have you heard that this year's parade will be even bigger than the 2015 V-Day parade?
Mark: Yes, I heard it's the biggest one yet. It's a great chance to see some never-before-seen weapons.
Jingjing: Right. We talked last time about planes, mostly.
Mark: And helicopters.
Jingjing: Helicopters, yes. Do you know much about ground vehicles and missiles?
Mark: Not nearly as much. I read about the DF-41, though. That's pretty state-of-the-art.
Jingjing: Refresh my memory. What can it do?
Mark: Well, it's a ground vehicle, and it can carry 10 to 12 missiles, each with a warhead, and each able to be directed at a different target.
Jingjing: Are those intercontinental missiles, and can the target be changed once a missile is launched?
Mark: Yes to the first question. It's the heaviest ICBM ever developed on wheels. And I'd assume yes to the second question. Again, I know less about those kinds of things.
Jingjing: Of course. Well, it does sound like it's going to be a spectacular parade. Hey, we still haven't talked about the fireworks!
Mark: That's what looks best from a little far away.
Jingjing: Exactly. A bunch of my contacts have posted photos and videos of those fireworks.
Mark: Mine too.
Jingjing: Well, now the parade is just a few days away. So, I hope you'll pick a good spot, or get comfortable in front of the TV, and have a good time.
Mark: You too, Jingjing. See you after National Day.
New words :
warhead(导弹的)弹头
– an explosive device attached to the tip of a missile
– a missile that can reach another continent (the DF-41 missiles, for instance, have a range that includes anywhere in the world)
– intercontinental ballistic missile
