Canada Adopts Ugly Packaging for Cigarettes
Canada has adopted new regulations for its cigarette packaging in hopes of drastically reducing tobacco use by 2035. The new dark brown packaging, which matches Australia’s plain packaging, has been described by market researchers as the “ugliest colour in the world.” Cigarette packaging in Canada already carries graphic warnings about the dangers of smoking, and regulators hope these will be more visible with the plain packaging. The size and appearance of cigarettes has also been standardized in Canada. At least thirteen other countries have taken similar measures in an attempt to reduce tobacco use.
