Look, Squeaks, it looks like it stopped raining!
吱吱，快看，雨要停了！
It's been raining here for a few days, and the news was saying that we might even get a flood.
雨已经下了几天了，新闻说我们可能会有洪水。
A flood is when there's water all over, even where there's usually land.
洪水就是到处都是水，即使陆地上也都是水。
Floods can be small and only cover a little space, or they can cover an entire city.
洪水可能很小，只淹没一块地方，也可能会淹没整个城市。
Now that it's stopped raining, that probably won't happen here.
既然雨停了，这里就不会有洪水了。
But it is pretty weird to think about the ground suddenly being covered with water!
但是一想到地面突然被水淹没，还是感觉很奇怪。
Normally, when rain falls, the water can go a few places.
正常情况下，下雨时，水会流向一些地方。
The rain can fall into someplace already holding water, like a lake or river,
雨水会降落到蓄水的地方，如湖泊河流，
or it can land on the ground, which soaks up the water like a sponge.
或者降落到地面上，它会像海绵一样吸水。
But have you ever tried pouring water on a sponge for a while?
但你有没有试过在海绵上倒水呢？
Eventually, the sponge can't hold any more water, and it starts to drip.
当海绵最终不能容纳更多的水时，它开始滴水。
If too much rain falls too quickly, something similar happens with the ground:
如果雨下得太多太急，地面也会发生类似情景：
it becomes completely full of water.
它会完全被水淹没。
The lakes or rivers holding the water can also become too full, and begin to overflow.
蓄水的湖泊河流也会变得太满，并开始往外溢水。
If the ground is too wet to soak up the extra water, a flood starts to form, almost like a giant puddle.
如果地面太湿、吸收不了多余水的话，洪水就开始形成了，它像一个巨大的水坑。
A normal puddle will slowly sink into the ground,
正常的水坑会慢慢地沉入地下，
but during a flood, there's nowhere for puddles to go, so they keep growing and growing.
但是在洪水期间，水坑无处可去，所以它们会继续变大变大。
Sometimes, the floodwater will cover roads, cars, and even buildings.
有时，洪水会淹没道路、汽车甚至建筑物。
Everything looks so different during a flood; it's like there's a new pond or lake.

You can even see which areas are higher up in a town, and which are lower.

The high spaces stick out of the water like islands,

and the low spaces get completely covered by the floodwaters.

Even when the rain goes away, the floodwaters can take a long time to go back down, sometimes days or weeks.

But eventually, it soaks into the ground, or evaporates and goes back into the air.
但最终，它会渗入地下或者蒸发，然后回到空气中。
Then, the flood is over.

Squeaks wants to know if you can explore a flood, and that's a good question!

Floods aren't for exploring!

Even though it looks like a big pond, a flood can be dangerous.

As the floodwater rises, it picks up everything it can along the ground.

There can be tree branches, trash, and even cars hiding under the water.
水中可能有树枝、垃圾，甚至是藏在水下的汽车。
The water can also pick up germs and other things
洪水还容纳了细菌和其他东西，
that can make people sick if they drink it, or sometimes if they touch it at all.
如果人们饮用或者接触它们就会生病。
It's definitely not a good place to go swimming.

Squeaks wants to know what should people do during a flood?

Well, it's a lot like what people do for other big problems, like a hurricane or tornado:
人们要做的事情和遇到其他大麻烦如飓风、龙卷风一样：
they make sure to be prepared.
一定要做好准备。
Lots of people have an emergency kit with plenty of food, water, and other supplies
很多人都有一个应急包，里面有足够的食物、水和其他物品。
to stay safe until the flood is over.
能在洪水结束之前保持你的安全。
Exactly! We keep an emergency kit in the Fort's closet.
没错！我们在沃斯堡的壁橱里放了一个应急包。
If a flood did happen, we would stay inside as long as it was safe and make sure not to go too close to the water.
如果洪水真的发生了，只要它安全，我们就待在里面，确保离水不太近。
In some places, especially near really big rivers or where it rains a lot, big floods can happen more often.
在某些地方，特别是大河附近或降雨量多的地方，大洪水可能更频繁地发生。
People who live in places like that might have a special location,
住在这样地方的人可能有一个特殊去处，
like a flood shelter, to go if there's a big flood.
比如避洪工程，在大洪水期间能够去躲避。
That way, they can stay out of the water if it gets too close to their homes.
这样，如果洪水离家太近的话，他们就可以躲开了。
Luckily, floods don't happen very often near the Fort, and this storm didn't cause one either.
幸运的是，堡垒附近并不经常发洪水，这场暴风雨也没有带来洪水。
But I bet there are some good puddles outside!

We should go do some splashing!
