I just got up from a long nap and it feels really great to get some rest.

And outside there are lots of animals just getting ready for a very long rest,

because it's going to be winter soon.

Animals like groundhogs.
比如土拨鼠。
Groundhogs are little animals that are about half a meter long.
土拨鼠是只有半米长的小动物。
They live in the United States and Canada and spend a lot of their time in burrows that they dig into the ground.
它们生活在美国和加拿大，大部分时间都待在地上挖的洞穴里。
and right now groundhogs are trying to get everything ready for a perfect cozy den.
现在，土拨鼠正试着为一个完美舒适的巢穴做一切准备。
They're preparing for hibernation.
他们正在准备冬眠。
Hibernation is like a deep, deep sleep that some animals go into during the winter.
冬眠就像一些动物在冬天进行的深度睡眠。
They'll sleep for months and months and they don't wake up until spring.
它们睡几个月，到了春天才会醒。
Oh, those animals aren't necessarily sleepy, Squeaks.
吱吱，这些动物不一定是困了。
Hibernation is a way for animals to survive the colder winter months.
冬眠是动物在冷冬生存的方式。
You see, animals normally need plenty of food to survive,
你知道的，动物正常情况下需要大量的食物才能生存，
but during cold winter months, lots of the food that animals like to eat goes away.
但在寒冷的冬月，动物喜欢吃的许多食物都没了。
In snowy cold places, the leaves fall off the trees, fruit stops growing and even the bugs go away.

For animals that eat these things, it can be a hungry few months.

To survive, some animals will migrate, meaning they'll travel somewhere else where there's more food.

Like birds that fly to somewhere warmer.

Other animals like squirrels will store food away to eat when it's cold.

But animals like groundhogs can't move somewhere else and they can't store enough food to last all winter.

That's right, Squeaks. They have to hibernate.

If a groundhog is hibernating, it doesn't matter if there isn't a lot of food around.
如果土拨鼠冬眠，周围的食物不够也没关系。
Because the groundhog is fast asleep.
因为它很快就睡着了。
I know you still need to wake up and eat after sleeping.
我知道你睡完觉后需要醒来吃东西。
But it's different for hibernating animals.
但冬眠的动物不同。
Because hibernating is more than a long nap.
因为冬眠不只是长时间睡觉。
Animals spend a long time preparing for hibernation.
动物需要为冬眠做长时间的准备。
Before they hibernate, a groundhog will spent weeks eating as much as possible.
土拨鼠冬眠前，需要花费数周的时间吃尽可能多的东西。
That little groundhog becomes a great big groundhog with a thick layer of body fat.
小小的土拨鼠会变大，有一层厚厚的脂肪。
Then once it's time, they'll cuddle up in their burrow and go to sleep.

Now, normally when a groundhog goes to sleep, their body rests a little bit,

but their lungs keep breathing and their heart keeps pumping blood normally.

To keep working, the groundhogs lungs and heart need energy from the food they eat.

But during the type of very deep sleep the groundhog goes into when they hibernate,

there are lungs and heart slowed way down.

Their heart only beats about five times a minute.

And they only breathe about twice a minute.

They go so slowly. They don't use as much energy.

And since the groundhogs body isn't using very much energy,

they don't have to wake up every day to eat more food,

instead they can use the energy they've already stored.

That's right, Squeaks. The groundhog uses the energy they stored up from eating all of that food in the weeks before they hibernate it.
吱吱，你说对了。土拨鼠利用的是冬眠前几周内吃东西储存的能量。
The layer of fat, the groundhog put on in the fall slowly gets used up for energy.
它们秋季长得脂肪层缓慢消耗，用作能量了。
And by the time the groundhog needs to wake up to eat, it's time for spring.
土拨鼠需要醒来吃东西的时候就到春天了。
Lots of different animals can hibernate, like bats, chipmunks and hedgehogs.
许多不同种类的动物也会冬眠，比如蝙蝠、金花鼠和刺猬。
Bats even hibernate in large colonies all huddled together to share more.
大堆蝙蝠甚至挤在一起冬眠来分享更多的东西。
Whoa, I don't know if robots need to hibernate, Squeaks.

But maybe it's time for you to take a nap.
