We'll end the class with this election, the election of 2008

and I'm really hoping we can get good county level maps
really give a fine scale on analysis to that
by that time we'll be used to looking at different counties
In the county patterns and of course we'll be looking at the states patterns as well
This is from a few days ago
It's interesting why Nebraska and Maine have little squares in them. Does anybody know?
They are the only states that split their electoral votes
There are five electoral votes from Nebraska

Two sort of associate with senators whoever wins Nebraska wins those two votes

and the other three have to do with congressional districts whoever wins the congressional districts wins those
So you can see the far eastern part in Nebraska possibility of Obama electoral vote pick-up there
How does this maps compare to the ones we were looking up in 2000,2004
We'll see same patterns but with something interesting differences
We still see the same strongly republican zone in the southeast
in the plain states all but not North Dakota and Montana Remember there? a little different
like I say, there is as today they are supposed showing North Dakota split 50-50 right now
Very interesting, it's been a long time. again I think it's 1964
So last time North Dakota voted for democratic presidencial candidate
At the state level, not at the presidential level that will be interesting to see
New Mexico pretty clearly in the democratic camp, Colorado trending that way
Nevada looks like it maybe trending that way as well
The biggest changing has to do with the far east. here is Virginia
which has been, like I say one of the most consistently republican voting states for a long time
Now it's trending pretty clearly both especially for the senatorial election but also for the presidential election
Virginia's changed especially the growth suburbs of Washington D.C
Big population concentration now
In electoral terms that areas is part of mid-Atlantic now, It's not part of the south
