We've been talking about all these kinds of gifts that the groom gave to the bride

But the bride also gave gifts to her betrothed
And one of the kinds of vessels that she might give was
what in Italian are known as Baccine
Bacchine
And here you see one that's very very similar
From exactly the same period the beginning of the 16th century in Venice
It's in the Victoria and Albert Museum
And in the centre of it
It has three little fish which are Christian symbols that are associated with baptism
And that's because once again these objects in the painting
relate to the wish for the creation of a family
And it's the kind of bowl that would have been used in the baptism
or also at times sweetmeats would have been put in these at the actual wedding feast itself
It was long thought that in the very centre of this
you could see Laura Bagarotto's coats of arms which you are looking at here
When the painting was cleaned in the early 1990's
the people in Rome who cleaned it thought that in fact you couldn't see her coat of arms
Those are just strokes they could be anything
In fact I don't really think it matters so much
whether her actual coat of arms are there or not
Because it is actually the placement of that dish
And how it relates to the rest of the painting
That make it very clear it's her gift to him
And can you see it's placed
There's her gift
Right above his coat of arms
And then you have a little fountain right below that a little spigot which water is spewing out of
and there's Cupid who's stirring up that water
And it's watering a rosebush which is lavishly blooming with flowers
Now that kind of gesture of water coming out of a spigot
Was almost always associated with ejaculation
So once again it is the idea of the creation
And growing the generation of a family as well as that rose bush
